My findings present that for-profit nursing properties had much less restrictive isolation measures throughout the pandemic than did not-for-profit nursing properties and that the rise in non-COVID deaths brought on by extra restrictive isolation measures outweighed the lower in COVID-19 deaths related to these measures. Thus, I discover that for-profit nursing properties had fewer complete deaths than not-for-profit nursing properties throughout the pandemic. Moreover, choices over isolation measures have been affected by components unrelated to the well being of residents, resembling incentives related to completely different possession buildings.
That is from Victor Melo, “Understanding Nonprofit and Authorities Possession: Proof from Nursing Properties within the Covid-19 Pandemic,” Mercatus Middle, January 25, 2023.
From the beginning, many people who have been skeptical of, and even opponents of, authorities lockdowns identified that advocates of lockdowns typically ignored tradeoffs.
This paper doesn’t handle lockdowns per se, however does level out the tradeoffs. Deaths from non-Covid causes matter too.
Apparently, Melo doesn’t take a look at the results of Governors Cuomo (New York), Wolf (Pennsylvania), Whitmer (Michigan), and Murphy (New Jersey) requiring nursing properties to just accept folks carrying Covid. It’s doable that he didn’t have the info to take action.
